The staff of Dave Poe's BBQ, located on Whitlock Avenue in Marietta, loaded up their trucks for Washington, DC on July 28 in order to serve their award-winning barbecue to members of the U.S. Senate. Each year, senators have the opportunity to showcase the best food in their states. Last week, Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson bestowed the honor upon David Poe and his crew of barbecue experts. Washington was not disappointed as the Russell building, which houses the senate offices, filled with the mouthwatering aroma of Atlanta's best BBQ. Positive comments floated down the hall as fast as the smell of the hickory-smoked pork. Although the intended guests included senators, military personnel and other officials, passersby flocked to the open doorway just to breathe in the tantalizing fragrance.
When the senators arrived for the luncheon, no one could wait to dig in. As they filled their plates with hand-pulled pork and beef, creamy coleslaw, savory baked beans, one senator was overheard saying, "This barbecue is even better than what we have in my home state." The wonderfully decadent macaroni and cheese was a favorite treat. The cheesy goodness even tempted one diminutive female senator to return for seconds and possibly even thirds. The warm reception Dave Poe's received in the nation's Capitol was also reflected in the 2009 Zagat survey. For the second year running, Dave Poe's earned the highest rating of "Extraordinary to Perfection" and best barbecue in Atlanta. In addition, Dave's was voted as having the "best ribs" in Access Atlanta's "Best of the Big A" survey.
Most locals will not be surprised by the restaurant's positive reputation both here at home and nationally. Dave Poe has been slow smoking competition quality BBQ for the past 34 years. After only a few years in the business, he became the first Grand Champion of the Georgia State BBQ Championship. Since then, Dave has accumulated wins in numerous states up and down the East Coast. He has been preparing legendary slow-smoked, time honored competition barbecue since 1975. At that time, Dave co-founded the family catering business, Stump and Sons. Dave has catered barbecue parties for the majority of the Fortune 500 companies here in the Atlanta area and throughout the Southeast. Over the years, he has fed everyone from Charlie Daniels to Vince Dooley and everyone in between.
